Using AI to battle extreme heat

by | Oct 25, 2024

Etienne Vos, a member of the HE²AT Centre and Research Manager at IBM, was recently interviewed by IBM for an article highlighting AI-powered tools to combat extreme heat. “As temperatures keep increasing, we must alert those most vulnerable to extreme heat waves,” says Etienne. As part of HE²AT, Etienne is helping develop an early warning system for extreme heat events.

This project, alongside other researchers and groups worldwide, leverages IBM’s Earth Observation foundation models, health data, socio-economic vulnerability information, and geolocations to identify urban heat hotspots. Through an app, individuals will receive personalized alerts about heat exposure based on their unique risk profile, helping them stay safe during extreme heat waves.
